September 1907, Venice: shots fired at Palazzo Maurogonato lead the police to Maria Tarnovska, a native of the Poltava province. This incident revealed a network of scams and suspicious deaths of her lovers.
The press quickly formed a convenient myth about the "femme fatale". However, archival protocols and court reports show otherwise: before us is not a demonic temptress, but a pragmatic organizer of financial schemes, who acted through psychological control over weak-willed men for the sake of insurance payments.
