The Black House and Its Residents
The Black House has become one of the landmarks of Lviv’s Rynok Square. Its dark facade conceals more than architectural history. It was home to an Italian merchant and customs collector, a family of pharmacists, a doctor and mayor who left the city before a siege, and people who spent years disputing an inheritance.
In this episode, I explore how the house’s residents established themselves in Lviv, gained and lost fortunes, saved others and sued their closest relatives. Their stories reveal the city’s trade and citizenship, the sieges of 1648 and 1672, and a Lviv that changed with its residents. The story of the building’s last private owner reaches into the twentieth century and ends tragically.
